Pair -mentoring between/for the Outward Bound Romania (OBR) instructors
We were planning to do a support group for OBR staff, we were keep postponding because as the instructors are from different areas and have different programs it would be very hard to organize it regulary. We switched for another plan rooting in the support group idea.
The idea is to have mutual mentoring between the instructors.

What we did until now:
- we had several meetings with the Program director and Staff development responsible and we evaluated the needs and posibilities and made the plan
This weekend (27-29.01.2017) will be organized a recruiting and selection program for 6 signed up people. The program will be an outdoor program, with expedition and sleeping outside. After this program will be selected the people for the instructor development process.
In the beginning of March will be a soft-skill training for the OBR staff, where all the instructors and newly signed up people will be present. We are going the introduce and start the program on the course.

Instructions
- the new assistant will write a short description about themself (before the soft-skill training, done through email)
- the OB instructors will be informed in email on the instructors discussion list about the project (before the soft-skill training, done through email), to think about their attitude towards the plan
- on the soft-skill training will be given an hour time-frame to introduce the project, where we will present the idea
- as a trial we wouldnt like a strict frame, but a very flexible one: give and ask for professional and personal support, which can be done by phone, by personal meetings, and variable frequency (weekly, monthly), based on the needs and openess
- the pairs will be formed considering the new comers presentation about themself and considering age, geographical distance for best matching
- to not interfere with the Recruitment support responsibles and Program managers jobs, would be important that technical and center information is left for dialogue with the office staff
- the trial project is planned for a 6 month period
- the mentors and mentorated as well are asked to comunicate the important issues with the office staff as well and can ask for addditional support from the office
- it will be a short evaluation of the project in the next instructor meeting or course where most of the staff are present and will be organized in about six month
- in the evaluation we will re-plan...can be continued the same project or can be extended for the whole instructor group (pair mentoring), can switch pairs, can stop in the case that is not considered efficient
Recruitment program (27-29 January, 2017)

Participants: 6 Romanian, Hungarian young people who signed up for instructor selection Main goal of the program: to see how they cooperate, how they take initiative, how they act in conflict situation, how they handle responsibility, how they communicate their needs, how they make decisions, how they handle situations when they are out of their comfort-zone and are under pressure |
Program:
- assessement center of the applicants - main activity 2.5 days winter expedition in the Ghiurgiului mountains
- detailed activities:
- snowshoes expedition, sleeping outside, problems-solving activities: preparation, planning, navigation plan of the expedition, cooking, preparing the equipment, building a shelter, making a fire, doing the night-watch, debriefings
Evaluation:
- group-evaluation of the whole program, activities, how they saw themselves and their relations to others, their attitude towards others
- self-evaluation forms which included: personal involvement, openness for learning, responsibility, leadership skills, communication skills
- personal discussions with each participant individually about their motivation, decision and future plans regarding the instructor training program
Follow-up:
In two weeks participants will get a feedback from the instructor team.
The selected and motivated participants will participate in the soft skill training organized in March for the Outward Bound instructor staff.
The pair mentoring program will be introduced on the program mentioned above.
